The buzz about “when Lewis Hamilton will sign the contract,” is finally over. For the past few months, there are some ‘conflicts’ between Hamilton and Mercedes.
Recently, Mercedes announced Hamilton will stick with them through the 2021 season. The seven-time World Champion signed a one-year contract with Mercedes.
What does Hamilton say about the new contract?
The 36-year-old driver with his chain of accomplishments amidst the global pandemic situation made 2020 a year to celebrate. The British driver broke the record of the legendary racer, Michael Schumacher. He achieved his seventh World Championship title at the Portugal Grand Prix in the 2020 season.
It took him quite a long time to sign his new contract with Mercedes. Subsequently, he went with a single-year contract instead of a multi-year contract, creating a buzz around the world.
Hamilton is happy to be back on the team. He is aiming for his eighth title in this one-year contract with Mercedes.
Hamilton said, “I am excited to be heading into my ninth season with my Mercedes team-mates. Our team has achieved incredible things together and we look forward to building on our success even further, while continuously looking to improve, both on and off the track.
“I’m equally determined to continue the journey we started to make motorsport more diverse for future generations and I am grateful that Mercedes has been extremely supportive of my call to address this issue.”
What does the Mercedes Boss have to say about the contract?
The Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff is excited to work another year with Hamilton. He claims 2020 was an unusual year for them and Hamilton. Therefore, it also took a little time for both parties to sign a new contract.
Wolff expects Hamilton to win his eighth title this season and break Schumacher’s record and add more chapters to their history.
Wolff said, “We have always been aligned with Lewis that we would continue, but the very unusual year we had in 2020 meant it took some time to finish the process.
“Lewis’ competitive record stands alongside the best the sports world has ever seen, and he is a valued ambassador for our brand and our partners.
“The story of Mercedes and Lewis has written itself into the history books of our sport over the past eight seasons, and we are hungry to compete and to add more chapters to it.”
What is the meaning of “diversity and inclusion”?
As we all know, that the Mercedes driver Hamilton has been an active voice against racism and commitment to diversity. The Mercedes switched to all black livery in 2020 season. Hamilton also wore T-shirts with messages to fight against racism. They both have been talking to start an initiative to support diversity in Formula 1 in continuation to the F1 agenda of the previous season.
Wolff both mentioned that the contract is for flexibility. This contract is the foundation of diversity and inclusion in the sport.
Hamilton said, “I’m proud to say we are taking that effort further this year by launching a foundation dedicated to diversity and inclusion in the sport. I am inspired by all that we can build together and can’t wait to get back on the track in March.”
Team Principal Wolff quoted, “Together, we have decided to extend the sporting relationship for another season and to begin a longer-term project to take the next step in our shared commitment to greater diversity within our sport. Lewis’s competitive record stands alongside the best the sports world has ever seen, and he is a valued ambassador for our brand and our partners.”
Hamilton already achieved his dream to match the Schumacher record. Now if he wins his eighth title, it will etch an unforgettable history in F1. This can also mean his end as a driver. The Britton desires to follow his passion in other arenas of life and work on them too.
Mercedes also agreed with the plan and wants to stay strategic. We can say the one-year contract is a trial to see what they do in 2021. The contract may extend based on his performance in 2021.
Hamilton and Mercedes announced their project-‘Accelerate 25’. This will aim to bring 25% of their new starters and engineers from diverse and minority backgrounds.
This flexibility with the one-year contract will give the opportunity to drivers from BAME background to take on the wheels from Hamilton. Hamilton is really supportive of this initiative than aiming for his eighth title.
What we can expect from Lewis Hamilton in the future?
We can just expect Hamilton to win his eighth title in 2021. We might not see him anymore behind the wheels after his eighth title. But he will not leave Formula 1 and make this sport more grand and diverse. Further, we can expect to see a birth of a new era in Formula 1.
