Michael Chandler believes that his first title defense could end up being against Conor McGregor. Speaking to ESPN, Chandler reveals his intentions for defending the lightweight title, after he acquires it at UFC 262.
Upon his arrival from Bellator, Chandler beat Dan Hooker via a first-round KO/TKO. Then, he was heavily touted for a matchup against Poirier for the vacated title. Poirier however, shifted his focus to the McGregor V Poirier trilogy.
As a result, Dana White named Charles Oliveira as Chandler’s opponent for the title fight. Chandler is aware of Oliveira’s 8 fight win streak. However, he also believes that Oliveira has a tendency to give up if fights aren’t going his way.
If he wins the lightweight belt at UFC 262, Michael Chandler believes it will be Conor McGregor standing across from him for his first title defense.

Chandler has predicted that he will win the 155-pound championship against Charles Oliveira on May 15. After that, he wants to make his first title defense against Conor McGregor before the end of the year.
“We’ll see. If I put my money on it, I think it’s Conor. I think he makes small adjustments, gets the win in the trilogy. That’s what I believe.” The series stands at 1-1 after Poirier knocked out McGregor in the second round of the bout on Jan. 23.
Big Plans for Michael Chandler
Whilst the winner of the trilogy would almost certainly be in line for a title shot, former interim champion Justin Gaethje is also in the mix. As things stand, all 3 fighters stand an equal chance to get their shot at Chandler and the title.
Chandler (22-5) will have a big test ahead of him in Oliveira (30-8) at UFC 262 in Houston. Charles Oliveira is actually the fans’ favorite to defeat Chandler in their vacant title fight. The title was recently vacated by retired former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
According to fans, Chandler is in for a rude awakening. After having beaten Hooker in 2 minutes and 30 seconds, it appears as though Chandler has his head in the clouds. Furthermore, Oliveira just so happens to be in the form of his life at the moment.
With Chandler’s talk about defending the title without even having fought for it, many feel he will not last long. Truly, Chandler’s arrogance could very quickly become his downfall. Although, if he does beat Chandler, it puts a whole different twist on the Lightweight rankings.
