In an episode of Joe Rogan’s Podcast, Kamaru Usman reveals the story behind his father’s imprisonment. Muhammed Usman, Kamaru’s father, was arrested for health fraud.
“It goes to attest the justice system here, so crooked and so backward”, says Kamaru. He explains how being an immigrant, people around you do not want you to succeed. As such, a similar situation occurred with Kamaru‘s father.
Previously, Muhammed Usman was the owner of a prosperous ambulance company. As the business grew, Muhammed enlisted the help of certain “people” to look after what he had built. Unfortunately, these “people” had other plans.
“Now because my father was the owner of the company, they put it all on him”. Kamaru talks about how his father got a sentence of 15 years due to the wrongdoings of others. Moreover, the Court proceeded to prosecute Muhammed even though the actual perpetrators pled guilty.
Kamaru admits that his father’s only fault was his ignorance. Meaning, he should have been more aware of the people he was hiring, and what their true intentions were. Furthermore, Kamaru also reveals how the Feds found no real evidence against his father, yet still acquitted him, solely based on accusations.
How Did Kamaru Usman Cope?
Kamaru Usman watched his father face imprisonment due to no fault of his own. His family was left helpless with no money and no support in an alien country. Despite this, Kamaru and all his siblings were successful student-athletes and went to college on scholarships.
Unfortunately, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’s academic success was also a means to further implicate his father. The Court believed that Muhammed Usman’s family continued to prosper due to his defrauded funds, and not due to their own hard work.
To date, the situation still affects Kamaru. However, his father is now out of prison after 10 years of the sentence. Moreover, Muhammed Usman was present when his son made his fourth title defense against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261.
Naturally, Kamaru felt great pride in his father’s presence for the first time ever at a fight. As such, he was could not hold back his tears whilst embracing his father after his victory. Moreover, Kamaru promptly wrapped his welterweight title around his father’s waist, signifying the man behind his success.
