Islam Makhachev is looking forward to take top fighters such as Rafael dos Anjos and Justin Gaethje to be eligible for an expected title fight. However, he is also open to fight anyone regardless of rank.
After this month’s win against Drew Dober, the Russian raised the winning streak to seven. Makhachev is considered the successor of Khabib Nurmagomedov, and most importantly, he also trains under Team Eagle.
Islam Makhachev returned to the octagon after more than one and half years. Therefore, he aims to keep his schedule tight, inching closer to a UFC title.
To get eligible for a title bout, Islam will need to fight with few top fighters. In that context, he targets Justin Gaethje and Rafael dos Anjos to level up his ranking.
However, Makhachev wants to fight anyone if he doesn’t get to fight Gaethje or Rafael Dos Anjos. With that note, he conveyed in an interview, “I wouldn’t sit around without an opponent. That’s not right. I will fight whoever they give me.”
Makhachev’s main goal is to remain active in the octagon and move forward with ranking as he has full support from the Eagle himself.
When can Islam Makhachev fight for a title?
Makhachev is now ranked at 11 in the lightweight division. Although he has a 19-1 record, he did not see any significant surge in the ranking as he always fights lower-ranked players.
The 29-year-old is now conscious about his ranking and wants to fight the top-ranked fighters. Islam Makhachev will need to get in the top ten, and then he can throw a challenge to other top fighters.
A win against a top fighter will level up his ranking, and a few more wins will make him eligible for the UFC lightweight title fight. Now ranked at 11, Makhachev can fight any top contender, but he will have to follow the UFC rule before challenging anyone.
