Beneil Dariush sees himself as a possible contender for new lightweight champ Charles Oliveira. Moreover, Dariush has now extended his winning streak to seven following his victory at UFC 262.
Beneil was thoroughly dominant in his three-round co-main event bout against Tony Ferguson. Eventually, after a drawn-out grapple fest, Dariush was victorious via a unanimous decision. The win means that he is now eligible for a top 5 fight in the lightweight division.
“I think I (have) a real case for the title,” Beneil tells MMA Junkie. “I have the longest streak in the top three right now. These guys, they’ll fight – I’ve seen contracts fall apart with Dustin and Conor. Things have not worked out for them. So, I’m sitting here and I’m ready to go”. Beneil indicates that due to complications that come with big-name fighters like Conor and Dustin, he could potentially be the right choice.
Interestingly, the Assyrian admits that the winner of McGregor vs Poirier 3 will be a shoo-in for the title shot. “In business numbers, that’s the fight that’s going to get the title shot”. However, he feels that his recent success inside the Octagon means that he is the most deserving candidate in the division.
Furthermore, Dariush reveals that he will be taking some time off to welcome his first child into the world. Additionally, Charles Oliveira is also taking time off to celebrate his title back home in Brazil. Hence, both the fighters will be operating on a similar time frame, making a potential fight, a fairly plausible idea.
Who Will Beneil Dariush Fight Next?
Whilst Beneil Dariush is certainly keen to fight Charles Oliveira, he will only do so when the time is right. “All you’ve got to do is give me a fight at the end of November or December,” Dariush says. Moreover, Dariush clarifies that he will stay with his family even if the Oliveira fight is available in the summer.
Previously, the pair were going to fight in October, but Oliveira had to withdraw due to injury. Since then, Oliveira has made his way to UFC gold, whilst Dariush worked his way to a prime contender spot in the division.
“I’ve already thought about it before,” Dariush says about facing Oliveira. “I don’t know if you remember, but I was already matched up with this guy a few times. I’ve thought about how I would fight him, I’ve thought about how I would get after him, and I think it’ll be pretty exciting. I think people would really like it”. With a very interesting summer for the lightweight division, it will be interesting to see how things unfold.
