The fight between German number one goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and Marc Andre ter Stegen can be resolved immediately off the field. Neuer plans to retire after the 2020 European Cup.
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Neuer, who has bagged 90 caps, has been the undisputed number one goalkeeper since 2010. However, Ter Stegen’s performance with Barcelona in the last season has made him a strong contender ahead of the 2020 European Cup.
After failing to get time to play in the recent European Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and Northern Ireland, 27-year-old Ter Stegen, with 22 caps on his behalf, voiced his dissatisfaction.
Neuer then demanded more support from his fellow goalkeeper. He said Ter Stegen’s comments did not help the team and showed a lack of respect for other German goalkeepers such as Bernd Leno and Kevin Trapp.
However, Ter Stegen called Neuer’s words inappropriate, because he only expressed his frustration because he was rarely revealed to the German national team.
According to SportBild magazine, the 2014 World Cup winner, Neuer, who will turn 34 next year, is seriously considering ending his career in the German national team, after the 2020 European Cup, if his team qualifies.
Neuer, who plays for Bayern, has won almost every major domestic and international title for club and country, including the World Cup and the Champions League. The next big international tournament after the 2020 European Cup is the 2022 World Cup.
