Rafael Nadal accidentally hit the head of a ball girl with a ball of his punch. Nadal immediately apologized by kissing the ball girl’s cheek.
The incident occurred when Nadal played the second round of the Australian Open 2020 against Federico Delbonis at the Rod Laver Arena on Thursday (1/23/2020) evening hrs. In the third set, Nadal accidentally hit the ball girl’s head with her ball punch.
Nadal swung a forehand when he received Delbonis’ service. Unexpectedly, the ball hit by the Spaniard hit the head of a ball girl standing near the umpire chair.
Nadal immediately approached the ball girl – who later was known as Anita – to check her condition. Uncomfortable, Nadal apologized by kissing Anita’s cheek and rubbing his head.
‘For him, it might not be a good moment. To be honest I am very worried about him. The ball is very fast and straight to his head. She is really a brave girl,’ Nadal said as quoted by the official tournament website.
‘That was one of the frightening moments I have experienced on a tennis court,’ he added.
Nadal then also met Anita and her family. He shared the moment of his meeting with Anita with a selfie uploaded on his social media.
Nadal won the match with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-1. The owner of 19 grand slam titles will next face his compatriot, Pablo Carreno Busta, in the third round.
