World cup Qualifiers update: France lacked “precision and movement” against Ukraine national team claims Antoine Griezmann

Antoine Griezmann left furious after a lack lustre defence in second half cost his team a much needed win in FIFA World cup qualifiers

Antoine Griezmann has expressed his frustration following France’s draw with Ukraine in Wednesday night’s World Cup qualifying match. The Barca forward further acknowledged that Didier Deschamps’ switch from a 4-3-2-1 to a 4-4-2 created several issues for the team in the final moments.

Griezmann did come up with the opening goal for his team in the first half. Still, given his fellow teammates’ lack of precision and movement in the second half, the team got held by the Ukraine team at the final whistle.

We needed maybe more offensive players who are able to go one-v-one on the sidelines. We will learn to play in a system like that and try to start winning again. We wanted to win but we didn’t play a great game. We’re going to look at it all and try to improve.” Griezmann said during an interview after the match.

Despite being held by Ukraine in the final minutes of the game, the Frenchman expects a better display by his team in the coming matches.

The world champions took to a flying start after Griezmann’s brilliant strike in the 19th minute. Still, the lead got compromised in the second half, given the own goal by defender Presnel Kimpembe.

Deschamps, too, admitted for the absence of that much-required pace and accuracy by his players in the match. That said, he hopes for a much-improved show by his squad in the upcoming games for the World cup qualifiers.

“We should have secured the win in the first half. We had the opportunities. It was more difficult in the second half,” said Les Blues’ manager.

Deschamps also said that the goal at the start of the second half could have been avoided. The team, according to him, pushed it till the end and this own goal certainly came as a heartbreak for them. He also appreciated the resilience shown by the Ukrainian team during the match.

“The goal that we conceded was avoidable. We pushed to the end. We are obviously disappointed, it would have been ideal to win.

“The result proves that Ukraine is a good team. We lacked energy in the second half. We can do better. It is not necessarily a match where we were going to create a lot of chances. We needed more precision and movement.”, Deschamps further added.

We must mention here that the French team came up with names like Kylian Mbappe, Kingsley Coman, Olivier Giroud, and Griezmann in their squad for this match. Still, given some lacklustre defence in the second half, the team didn’t hold up on the lead provided by Griezmann in the opening 20 minutes.

France will now face Kazakhstan on Sunday before moving to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday for the final match of the Fifa world cup qualifiers.
