“The referee apologised to me” portugal coach Fernando Santos opens up with the true verdict after Ronaldo Goal refusal

"The referee apologised to me" portugal coach Fernando Santos opens up with the true verdict after Ronaldo Goal refusal

Fernando Santos was enraged at referee Danny Makkelie for costing Portugal the game against Serbia, despite the Dutchman apologies after the incident. The decision made by the experienced officiator concluded the game with a two-two result.

During the game, Cristiano Ronaldo had his chance on goal ruled out by Makkelie. The Dutchman stuck to his decision until after the game when he approached Fernando Santos and apologized for his error.

Santos revealed to reporters the truth that transpired between him and the referee. In an interview, he said, “after the game, the referee apologized to me and admitted his mistake.”

The incident took place within the dressing room. There lies the truth of what happened with Makkelie and mesaid Fernando.

Though he received an apology, Santos remained enraged and said, “The goal counted, and yet we did not get to relish from it. In a game of such magnitude, mistakes such as this should never happen.”

The Portuguese international is right to be angry as Portugal lost the chance to secure another three points in their quest to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Furthermore, in the game against The Eagles, A selecao was denied a penalty, which added further insult to injury.

This is not an excellent start for Portugal; however, their manager has overcome more enormous odds with players of lesser quality than the Os Navagaderos.

Santos a beacon of hope for Portugal?

Fernando Santos managed Greece before taking over the Portuguese national team. In the four years with the Grecians, he influenced them to make themselves better and strive for better.

Greece had been a dark horse entry in the World Cup for many years. By securing the Euro’s in the year 2004, their potential became a reason of worry for the other national teams. With Fernando Santos’ arrival and the emergence of the Ethniki in the 2014 World Cup, many feared the worst. Greece overcame the group stage with a bit of difficulty.

Then they faced Costa Rica and promptly exited the competition through a penalty shootout. Though they exited the World Cup, the people of Greece were thankful for Santos as he took Greece beyond the group stages.

This was a feat that the Galanolefki could never achieve in their nineteen years in the prestigious competition. Thus his decision to leave the Mediterranean side led to a few tears.

Santos’s record shows his capability to take a national team past their previous achievements, which would enlighten the hearts of the fans of A Selecao. He has already proven his quality by winning the 2016 Euros and the 2019 UEFA National League title. Before him, the Portuguese side had never won a single piece and can be termed as their ‘lucky charm.’

This should not come as such a shock as the Portuguese manager appeared in his 1000th game as a football manager.

Santos is a manager with vast experience, and it is evident with the 1000 games he has managed. With his wisdom, he can lead Portugal to the heights they have never achieved before.

However, he would need to see better coordination from his players, which means more awareness when in the opposition half. Incidents such as outbursts need to be limited as problems need to be solved and not instigated.

The 2022 Qatar World Cup would make its way to Portugal if A Selecao listens to the advice of Santos and stick to his tactics. Then again the referees will have to avoid making errors as a goal can only be ruled out with their say-so.
