Pep Lijnders, Liverpool’s assistant manager will be using the International break in a very unique way. Liverpool called up 12 startles from their academy to train with the first team during the break. The motive behind this move is to create a better bench strength towards the end of the season.
Vitor Matos and Alex Inglethorpe hand-selected the twelve of them who are going to train with the likes of Allison Beckar, Fabinho, and so on. One such player who’s expected to make a mark on Jurgen Klopp is Kaide Gordan. The 17-year-old has been terrific lately, along with youngsters like Mateusz Musialowski, the 17-year-old Polish forward.
Owen Beck, Conor Bradley, Jake Cain, Ben Woodburn, Luis Longstaff, and Jakub Ojrzynski will also be part of the training. This will be a massive boost to the German coach. Liverpool suffered a lot because of injuries and needed a new character to bring in new things in training. Currently, nothing is going in favor of Liverpool in the Premier League, thus this change can be a boon to the team.
“We use the time to give a proper impulse to our Academy process,” Lijnders said. He added, “The best clubs in world football have something in common: a one-club mentality. Being split, you have nothing”.
Lijnders further added, “It’s a special situation for such a club to create this week, so many talents together with Millie, Fabinho, Ox, Naby, and Shaq. Talent needs models, they need examples much more than criticism. It’s great to see when talent and experience come together. The carrot is mightier than the stick, they say! They need to see our high values, our humbleness at the training ground”.
Pep Lijnders elaborates on Liverpool’s next-gen?
Jurgen Klopp from his time in Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool is known for grooming young talent. Players like Robert Lewandowski, Gundogan, Reus and to Trent Alexander Arnold to Robertson, and even Roberto Firmino were all groomed by him. If he sets the right tone in these players, then no doubt it’s going to be massive for the young guns.
These players will be training with 11 of Liverpool’s first team members. Keita, Milner, Phillips, and Chamberlain will also be a part of the squad along with all the winter signings. Both the teams are also scheduled to play a friendly match on Saturday afternoon at Kirkby training ground.
“We play this internal game for a few different reasons: first to keep rhythm, second to create challenges tactically”, is what Linjder said. The interesting part in this is how Liverpool is keeping all the options open and showing the zeal to improve tactically. The Champions League is far from over and the battle to finish in the top 6 is still on. Amidst all these, the team is training to fill in the tactical gaps with academy players is a commendable move.
When asked to explain his point regarding tactics, the assistant manager added, “At one moment this week, we had Millie, Naby, Shaq, Ox, and Fab competing against seven young guns. Five seniors versus seven talents in a big space where we had to defend the midfield line instead of our goal. That’s what I mean by creating tactical challenges”.
Liverpool needed this for a long time now. Fresh faces who bring new things to the field are very important for any club. However, because of the Covid situation, the clubs don’t have that money to bring in new exciting prospects. If Liverpool on the other hand can bring everything out of their academy, tables may turn for the Merseyside club.
