Manchester United’s recent loss to Leicester City in the FA cup has put the manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a very difficult position. The Norwegian is receiving a lot of heat and one such comment came from their legend Gary Neville himself.
The Foxes thrashed United out of the FA Cup tournament by beating them 3-1 in the quarterfinals. The Red Devils are already out of the Carabao Cup and the hope for the league title is almost over. Thus FA cup was very important for the club. The former defender expressed his disappointment, considering them not having much left to win this season.
This year the scenario is more-or-less same as any other year. Premier League looks out of reach for United and they only have Europa League in their hand. Neville feels they should bank on this and finally win a trophy under the Norwegian. “Yes, of course finishing second would be the priority at the start of the season, but winning a trophy with that would be a real priority and now they only have the Europa League left”.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer transformed the way Manchester United used to play post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. The manager didn’t quite get the players he wanted before the start of the season, but still managed to keep the Red Devils in a stable and secured position.
It is important to note that the 48-year-old has won everything with his beloved club. However, that’s only as a professional footballer. He won 6 Premier League titles during that time but never managed to win one as a coach. He came close in the 2017-18 season when United finished 2nd in the league. However, their arch-rivals Manchester City were way ahead of them as were crowned Champions. This only proves that he knows the formula, but only the chemicals are missing! However, an excuse doesn’t work on a football pitch. So the question remains, when will he lift a trophy with the Red Devils?
What went wrong for Ole Gunnar Solksjaer in the FA Cup?
Solskjaer made as many as five changes from his team from United’s Europa League tie against AC Milan. He dropped the likes of Rashford, Bruno, Luke Shaw, and Cavani from the starting XI, and that’s what bothered Neville.
“I’m surprised the team was weakened against Leicester, I’m surprised he (Solskjaer) rotated as much, I know he has been doing that, but this was a real chance,” Neville said.
He added, “If you think the semi-final draw that occurred at half-time of that game which meant the winner of the Leicester vs Manchester United tie would play Southampton. It is not a gimme against Southampton by any stretch of the imagination, but what an opportunity, and I genuinely believe that that group of players need to win a trophy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer”.
If United fails to beat Granada in the quarterfinals of the Europa League, then tables might turn for the manager. United has been very ordinary in Europe and with no domestic cups in his time, the ‘Super subs’ résumé doesn’t look impressive. There’s no question regarding the brand of football United played, however, all the supporters look for a trophy at the end of the season. With Ole in-charge, the day isn’t very far considering his influence and tactical skill. However, it’ll be interesting to see whether the management remains patient for that long.
