Eric Abidal made an admission about the exit of Pep Guardiola from Barcelona on January 6th, 2013. Prior to the Spaniard’s departure, the former Barcelona technical director wanted Pep to stay back at Barca. The forty-one-year-old Frenchman admitted he did his best to make Guardiola feel at home at Camp Nou.

Subsequently, Eric Abidal was a massive admirer of the former Blaugrana coach. In an interview on March 22nd, 2021, he revealed that “Pep always said, if you want to be the best, then you have to train yourself to be exactly that. If you fulfill your tasks for the week, then you will automatically win games. I never wanted Pep to leave and. The allegation that we wanted him gone is not true.”

Eric Abidal has shown his worth in the market with his shrewd signings. They have helped increase the depth of the Barca squad. Abidal was the critical component that prompted the Blaugrana to buy players like Martin Braithwaite and Arthur Melo. These players have not done much this season. However, their presence has allowed the Catalans to give rest to their primary team and giving them playtime in the Camp Nou line-up from time to time.

The Abidal coach dilemma

Eric Abidal now faces a more significant dilemma in deciding who will manage Barcelona if Ronald Koeman is booted. Talks in and around the Camp Nou have suggested the names of former player Xavi Hernandez and the two-time Champions League-winning coach Pep Guardiola.

Xavi is now plying his trade in the Middle East (Qatar) with Al Sadd. Though the league is not competitive, his return to Camp Nou would be a relief for the disgruntled Culers. It will also be a temporary relief for Eric Abidal, who is in dismay about his former club’s shape. The former Spanish international’s return from the Middle Eastern league can be seen in the same way as when Arsenal signed Arsene Wenger from Guangzhou Evergrande. Hopefully, his return will spark the same effect as Wenger did when he joined the Gunners.

More than Xavi, Eric Abidal, and Barcelona are waiting for Pep Guardiola’s return at the Catalan club. In his time there, Pep won two Champions Leagues and innumerable La Liga titles. Furthermore, the reunion of Pep and Messi will delight the Culers. Even more than the idea of Xavi managing their club.

Eric is a lot similar to the Spanish manager in his mentality and is critical of the current Barcelona team. Hence he has given his honest but brutal opinion on the recruitment of Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona signed the thirty-year-old Frenchman on July 24th, 2019. Since his arrival, he has only recorded seventeen goals and ten assists in sixty-one appearances overall for Barca in La Liga. This record does not exhibit even half of Griezmann’s potential at Atletico Madrid. In his time there, he recorded ninety-four goals and thirty-two assists in a hundred and four appearances. This change in form and lack of ability has made Eric Abidal question the Frenchman’s presence at Camp Nou.

In an interview, he said, “If we did not approach Atletico and sign Griezmann, then I am sure Neymar would have made a return. Our staff made an approach for the Brazilian through the CEO of PSG. The move would have gone through if not for the urgency to replace Neymar than recruit him back.”

The comments show the deep regard that the Frenchman has for the Brazilian superstar. If Abidal was still at Barcelona, he would always try to bring Neymar back to Camp Nou. Though the termination from his post at Barcelona on August 19th, 2020, makes that close to impossible.
