Dean Henderson felt shattered as Simon Kjaer scored the equalizer for AC Milan in the Europa League. Subsequently, Manchester United faced Milan in the first-leg round of 16 ties on March 11th, 2021. The game was in favor of United in the beginning. Then they conceded a corner and gave the Rossoneri an away goal. Consequently, the goal provides an advantage to the ll Divalo before their game against Manchester United on March 19th, 2021.

Dean Henderson faced accusations from ex-Manchester United player Paul Scholes. In an interview on March 12th, 2021, Scholes said, “Henderson should have used the game against Milan to cement his place in the team. In the absence of David De Gea, he had a big opportunity to convince Ole of his abilities. Once De Gea returns, his position between the sticks will go back to him. For Dean to retain his position, he has to a lot more work.”

Moreover, his former team-mate Owen Hargreaves agreed with the point Scholes was saying. He said in an interview, “The goal was an easy one to save. Being a goalkeeper, he should have understood the situation better.”

Henderson’s history

Henderson is a by-product of the Manchester United academy and was sent on loan to various English clubs. In the last Premier League season, he played for Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United. He kept veteran keeper Simon Moore and young shot-stopper, Jake Eastwood on the bench while playing for the Blades in two consecutive seasons (one in the Championship and the other in the EPL). In his time with Sheffield, the youngster accumulated thirty-four clean sheets in eighty-two appearances. Furthermore, at Manchester United, the Englishman has three clean sheets in five games played. The youngster came back to United on August 14th, 2020, and since then, he has played second fiddle to De Gea.

Following an injury to the Spaniard, the twenty-four-year-old shot-stopper received a few more hours of game time. However, his error in the Europa League has left Ole Solskjaer red-faced.

Ole blames Dean Henderson to be at fault for draw with Milan

Ole blames Henderson for Milan draw

The Manchester United boss was left enraged after an error by Dean Henderson cost his side the advantage in the second leg of the Round of 16. The Norwegian placed his trust in the Englishman after observing him on loan with Sheffield United. The youngster had produced output similar to that of veteran players during his loan spell. However, his recklessness has turned out to be costly for Ole and his men.

Following the game, Ole said in an interview on March 12th, 2021, “The header only came in from six yards away; he can save it. I have seen him save more serious attempts during training. It is not a good precedent when a team concedes at home.”

The comments would leave Henderson ruing his overconfidence, and now he will have to work harder to convince Ole to let him start ahead of David De Gea. Moreover, Manchester United could lose De Gea out to Real Madrid or other teams. If Dean proves his worth, he can continue in the Man U starting eleven and save his side a lot of money in the transfer market (money they will use to buy a replacement for David). So the beneficial solution for both sides is to give Henderson a few more games and hope he can successfully replace the Spaniard in the Red Devils line-up.
