Gian Piero Gasperini did not falter as Atlanta lost to Real Madrid by three goals to one in the Champions League on March 17th, 2021. The Italian beamed with pride, knowing that his team fought the seven-time champions till the end and did not give up. The sixty-three-year-old was confident of his game plan against the Spanish Giants. But he also believes that mistakes can be committed.

In the follow-up to the game, Gian Piero Gasperini was at a disadvantage. Los Blancos had won the away game at Gewiss Stadium by one goal, thus granting them an away goal advantage. Piero went into the second leg with a strong line-up, which included star striker Luis Muriel leading the squad.

Unfortunately for Gasperson, Los Vikingos was too strong a team for his side. Courtesy of a few goals from Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos, and Marco Asensio, the Nerazzuri exited the Champions League.

In an interview on March 17th, 2021, he said, “We had a clear-cut game plan and followed it well. It is disappointing that we could not make most of the few chances gifted to us. We wanted to play a lot better than what we did.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane did not feel threatened by his opponents, and he stated that “Atlanta did not sniff out our goal too often despite having a few chances.”

Piero’s Champions League progress this season

Gian Piero Gasperini secured the Champions League for his team after they finished in third place (five points away from league leaders Juventus). In the Champions League, they were placed in a tough group with Liverpool and Ajax. However, they cleared the group, two points behind Liverpool.

Then came their fixture against Madrid and their eventual exit from the competition.

Furthermore, Atlanta’s survival in the Champions League was solely based on the attacking prowess of his strikers Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel. Muriel, in particular, is a dangerous player, with him being bested in terms of goals scored by only Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku in Serie A.

Piero has guided his team to the Champions League in two consecutive years after arriving at the Gewiss Stadium on May 14th, 2016.

They expected to pull off a miracle along the lines of the same against Los Merengues. Nonetheless, after the game against Madrid, Gasperno mentioned that he was not disappointed over the loss.

He said, ” My team played against a team considered as one of Europe’s best and lost while fighting. Although, I am glad that my team could experience this loss and the game.”

Piero will receive another shot at the Champions League because his team is in the fourth position of the Serie A points table with a few games in front of them.
