Sam Darnold Trade to Pathers Is a ‘Legacy Defining Risk’ for NY Jets GM Joe Douglas, Feels Jay Williams

Sam Darnold

The NFL offseason springs yet another surprise at the face of the football fanatics. Sam Darnold, a player once loved by the New York Jets fans, got traded to the Carolina Panthers.

This came after weeks of speculation by pundits and analysts about whether Darnold should stay or look for better options.

However, this was to be expected because the New York Jets are still looking forward to signing Zach Wilson in this year’s draft. They have had a dismal past couple of seasons and are trying to mend the damage. That includes getting rid of deadweight and bringing in fresh talent.

TV analyst Jay Williams, talked about the opportunities Darnold will get in Carolina. He also spoke on how this trade comes as a massive risk-reward endeavor for the Jets, especially for the general manager Joe Douglas.

He remarked, “Here are my three things real quick. Number one would be that this was a legacy-defining risk for Joe Douglas. Sam Darnold thanked the lord after his trade. He thanked him because he knew that he would now at least be in the presence of D.J. Moore and Robbie Anderson.”

Williams also expressed his displeasure with the Chicago Bears not being able to sign Darnold.

He said, “I don’t know what the Chicago Bears are doing. They took Andy Dalton instead of being patient and landing Sam Darnold. When we leave people in positions of power who don’t know what they are doing, that’s how you get stuck with Andy Dalton.”

What do the New York Jets get in return for Sam Darnold?

With trade as big as that of Sam Darnold, the Jets are guaranteed to get good return. They did so by receiving a sixth-round pick in the 2021 draft. Along with that, the Jets will also get one second-round and one fourth-round pick in the 2022 draft.

In essence, both the franchises involved, gained quite a lot with this trade. Panthers, who were in desperate need of a quarterback, got Sam Darnold.

On the other hand, the Jets received a huge influx of young talent in their roster over the course of the next two years.

The 2021 NFL Draft is scheduled to be held from 29th April to 1st May in Cleveland, Ohio. The Jacksonville Jaguars will have the opportunity of taking the first pick, followed by the New York Jets.
