Watch: Zion Williamson Looks To Emulate Legends Like Magic Johnson, Talks About Pelicans’ Playoff Hopes

Zion Williamson

Zion Williamson has quickly risen to be one of the most sought-after young talents in the league. His big frame and nimble movement is just the start of what he can add to any squad he plays for. He has single-handedly turned the Pelicans’ fortunes around since they drafted him back in 2019.

In some of the more recent fixtures, Zion has taken it upon himself to deliver match-winning performances for the team. However, his efforts were not enough in the game against the Washington Wizards as they were successful in blocking his shots and guarding him in overtime.

In the post-game press conference, the 20-year-old talked about his role models and how he plans on molding his game after them. He said, “When it comes to that, I watch Magic Johnson and Mike when he ran point guard for a little bit. I look at old-school players because when they ran point, they were hardcore competitors.”

He continued, “They just wanted to win. No matter what the cost. That is just how my mom and stepfather coached me. They wanted me to have an old-school, out-the-mud mentality towards the game.”

The New Orleans Pelicans have not performed well this season. They have played good basketball in many games, however, lady luck has not been in their favor. There have been innumerable defensive frailties on display. Stan Van Gundy and his men will have to work on them in the future.

Zion was also asked about the team’s playoff hopes this season. He said, “Nobody plays the game to lose. We go out there and we are competing. We want to win every game we play. When that time of the season comes, we hope to be able to compete. the Pelicans make the playoffs if we’re consistent in defense and bring intensity to every game.”

The Pels are 11th in the Western Conference. At the moment, they are not in contention for the playoff spots. However, they will look forward to improving their game ahead of the business end of the campaign.
