Robert Covington Shares What the Blazers Should Do to be one of the “Top 10 Teams Defensively”

Robert Covington and Carmelo Anthony

The Portland Trail Blazers traded Robert Covington last offseason to improve their defense and eventually make it one of the best in the NBA. So far, that has not come to fruition, not even close. But Covington has been proponing his all effort into the Blazers’ defense improving, despite its 28th ranking.

Despite its 28th ranking, Robert Covington believes that they will get back to the top 10 with the center Jusuf Nurkic and guard CJ McCollum’s performance.

“We’re putting a big emphasis on it and guys are taking on that challenge as well,” Covington said.

Following Thursday’s loss to the Phoenix Suns, Covington’s effort is now questionable. The Blazers will visit the Minnesota Timberwolves this weekend to play a back-to-back game. Trail Blazers are emphasizing defense ahead of this game.

With that note, Covington conveyed, “We’re putting a big emphasis on it and guys are taking on that challenge as well.”

Robert Covington shares Trail Blazers defensive plan

Trail Blazers’ veteran and defensive leader Robert Covington is pretty confident about their defensive plan for the rest of the NBA 2021 season.

“We’re a very good offensive team, but we know that we’re not going to be able to outscore everybody,” Covington explained.

He is hopeful about ranking at the top 10 defensively. “Once we get everyone back and everyone continues to prosper and… the season gets down towards playoff time, I think that we’ll become one of the top 10 teams defensively,” the Blazer’s defensive leader mentioned.

The 30-year-old believes that the teammates will put their best into the Second Half of the season, leading them to the top 10 in the league.

“We want to be top 10,” Covington continued. “Coach put us as the top tier of the league, top half, but you know me, I want to put expectations of it, like we can be top 10 if we really commit to it. We can be top 10.”

However, Robert Covington showed his playing class in 2018, as he was named All-Defensive First Team in 2018 while he was playing with the Philadelphia 76ers. Hence, there is a reason to believe in the Trail Blazers star.

“That’s coming from a guy who has been there before,” Covington said. “I want to put that pressure on guys so we can really do it.”

Now that Blazers are sinking in the point table, they may have to struggle to reach the playoff, but Covington’s goal is to finish at the top 10 position.

Our goal is to be in the top half [defensively]. From this point forward our goal is to be in the top half. I think it’s a realistic goal for us,” he said.
