Keldon Johnson makes History for the San Antonio Spurs after Tim Duncan

San Antonio Spurs' Keldon Johnson

The San Antonio Spurs is one of the most decorated franchises in the history of the NBA. Over the last two decades, NBA Hall of Famer Tim Duncan and co. made it possible for the franchise to compete at such a level.

However, after Duncan’s retirement, the Spurs’ dominant era came to an end. After struggling to find their groove for a few seasons, the team is once again showing signs of making a comeback. They are led by DeMar DeRozan as they are trying to compete for a playoff berth in the 2020-21 NBA season.

But tonight, it was Keldon Johnson who stole the show against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Johnson finished off the game with 23 points and 21 rebounds and helped the team win the 22nd game this season.

According to NBA History’s Twitter, this is the first time since 2013 that any player has recorded 20+ points and 20+ rebounds for the Spurs. Prior to Johnson, it was none other than franchise legend Tim Duncan who recorded this star line.

Are the San Antonio Spurs legit contenders for the 2020-21 NBA Championship?

Although the Spurs do not have multiple superstars like other Western Conference teams, they are still performing at an elite level. DeMar DeRozan is playing at an amazing level, which has been the recipe of success for the team so far.

Additionally, they still have Gregg Popovich as their head coach, who is unarguably one of the best coaches in the history of the league. Pop’s strategies have brought out the best in most of the team.

Keeping everything in consideration, the San Antonio Spurs might make the playoffs. But winning the NBA Championship is far from their reach, at least for this season.
