After making all the big names in the F1 circuit for over two decades, Kimi Raikkonen may revisit his ‘Old love’ NASCAR or Rally Championship in 2022.
Even with that desire in his heart, the 42-year-old Finnish driver is not yet ready to give up on his celebrated F1 career. According to Raikkonen, he will keep going until he is having “fun” out on the track.
We must mention that Finn will line up for his 19th season in the Formula 1 grid in 2021. Still, his one-year extension with Alfa Romeo for the 2021 season left many fans curious about his next career stop.
I won’t think about it until I quit F1 – Kimi Raikkonen.
Formula 1 is Kimi Raikkonen’s, first love. So, he is adamant about keeping up with it until the ‘fun’ factor stays intact. But yes, he could revisit either the World Rally Championship and NASCAR once he retires.
“There are a lot of fun things to do, but I won’t think about it until I quit Formula 1,” Raikkonen told a famous sports magazine. “Whether it’s the Rally, NASCAR, or a completely different racing class, we’ll see.”
We must mention that after getting dropped by Ferrari in 2009, Raikkonen switched to NASCAR and Rally championships for a while.
He joined Citroën Junior Team and Ice 1 Racing in WRC while finishing at the tenth spot in back-to-back seasons. Talking of NASCAR was just a one-off appearance in the NASCAR’S Truck Series and the Nationwide Series.
Raikkonen then returned to Formula 1 in 2011 with Lotus, while eventually re-signing with Ferrari. He grabbed the third spot in the 2018 championship and then switched to Alfa Romeo.
Besides NASCAR and Rally Championship, Raikkonen might opt for endurance racing after his F1 retirement. It was only Last year when Raikkonen drove an Alfa Romeo Giulia at the Nürburgring Nordschleife and his teammate Antonio Giovinazzi.
So, when asked about a potential career in Endurance racing while participating in 24 Hours of the Nürburgring with his good friend Toni Vilander, he replied: “Oh yes, that would be great! “But as said: there are plenty of nice things.”
Raikkonen is under contract with Alpha Romeo until the end of the 2021 season. No matter where he ends up afterward, he will always remain one of the most celebrated F1 drivers ever.
