Ranking the 10 Most Successful F1 Teams of All Time

Throughout Formula 1’s 70-year history, the sport has seen many iconic car manufacturers compete with each other to win races and championships. Across the ages, some teams have been more dominant than others while some struggled to find a grip in the sport. From battling out one another to upgrading themselves, the battle to be the best in the business has been a long term goal for the constructors involved.

The sport has seen tens of different teams engaging themselves for the ultimate prize but very few managed to get hold of it. In today’s article we’ll take a detailed look at the 10 most successful teams in Formula 1. So, lights out and away we go:


Benetton Formula 1.

Starting with number 10, we have Benetton. Let’s go through some stats of this incredible constructor. Benetton were founded by the Benetton Family who were active during the years 1986 to 2001 in Formula 1. It had base in Witney and Enstone of United Kingdom. With total of 27 Race Wins in total Benetton won 2 Driver’s Championships in 1994 and in 1995 and 1 Constructor’s Championship in 1995. Michael Schumacher, Martin Brundle and Nelson Piquet are some of the famous drivers to have driven for Benetton.


Up ahead at number 9 we have Tyrrell. Let’s focus on their statistics now. Tyrrell was founded by Ken TyrrellThe team was active during 1970 and raced their last in 1998. The team had their base in Surrey, United Kingdom. Tyrrell has 23 Race Wins in total in all the races they’ve taken part in. With 3 Driver’s Championships in 1969, 1971 and 1973 and 1 Constructor’s Championship 1971, the team was fairly successful in the sport. Some of the famous drivers to have driven for Tyrrell are Martin Brundle, Jos Verstappen and Jackie Stewart. But unfortunately Tyrrell no more competes in Formula 1.


Up next at number 8 we have French giants Renault. They boast some vital stats. Renault F1 team was founded by Renault Automotive. The team was active from 1977 to 1985 and then from 2002 to 2011 and again from 2016 till 2020. Renault had their base in Essone, France and in Enstone, United Kingdom. The French team has 35 Race Wins in total and from doing this they’ve managed to pick up 2 Driver’s Championships in 2005 and in 2006 and 2 Constructor’s Championships in 2005 and 2006. Some of the famous drivers to have driven for Renault are Fernando Alonso, Alain Prost, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jarno Trulli. Interestingly Renault don’t compete in Formula 1 anymore. However, they’ve changed their team under the team name Alpine and they’ve Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon as their drivers.


Next at number 7 we have Brabham from United Kingdom. Let’s go through what they have in store. Brabham was founded by Jack Brabham. The team was active from 1962 to 1987 and again from 1989 till 1992. Brabham had their race base in Cheesington and Milton Keynes of United Kingdom. With 35 Race Wins in total, Brabham has 4 Driver’s Championships clinched in 1966, 1967, 1981 and 1983. The team also has 2 Constructor’s Championships in 1966, 1967. Some of the famous drivers to have driven for Brabham were Niki Lauda, Nelson Piquet and Martin Brundle. Brabham unfortunately no more functions in Formula 1.


At number 6 we have Austrian giants Red Bull. They’ve stored in some energetic statistics to show. Red Bull was founded by Dietrich Mateschitz (owner of Red Bull) and the team has been active from 2005 and it’s still competes in Formula 1. The Austrian team has their base in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom. With 66 Race Wins in total, Red Bull has 4 Driver’s Championships clinched in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 and 4 Constructor’s Championships won in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Some of the famous drivers to have driven for Red Bull were Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber, Daniel Ricciardo. Red Bull are highly anticipated to win the 2021 Championship with Max Verstappen leading the charge along with Sergio Perez.


Up next at number 5 we have British automobile giants Lotus. Let’s see what they have in store. Lotus was founded by the Lotus Cars company. It has been functional from 1958 to 1994 and again from 2012 to 2015. The team had their base in Hethel, United Kingdom during the first stint and in the second stint they had base in Enstone, United Kingdom. Lotus has won 79 Race Wins in total and from there they picked up 6 Drivers Championships in 1963, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1972 and 1978. Along with this, the British team has clinched 7 Constructor’s Championships from 1963, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1978. Some of the famous drivers to have driven for Lotus were Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Ayrton Senna, Jochen Rindt and Kimi Raikkonen. Lotus unfortunately no more competes in Formula 1 as they’ve sold their team to Renault back in 2016.


At number 4, we have the legendary Williams from Britain. How about we check why they deserve to be placed so high. Williams was founded by Frank Williams and Patrick Head. Ever since 1978 the team has been active in Formula 1 no matter what their form and place is. Once very much successful and a beast in the sport has their base in Grove, United Kingdom. With 114 Race Wins in total, the team that relies heavily on history has 7 Drivers Championships picked up in 1980, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1996 and 1997. Williams are now mere shadows of themselves as they picked up 9 Constructor’s Championships in 1980, 1981, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1997 during their golden period. Some of the famous drivers to have driven for Williams were Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet and Alan Jones. Currently Williams function with George Russell and Nikolas Latifi in their ranks and they can barely put up with the top teams.


At second runner’s up position we have German giants Mercedes. They have the highest winning percentage of 51%. Let’s check why they’re ranked so high up the order. One of the most successful Formula 1 outfit Mercedes F1 team was founded by Diamler AG through Mercedes Benz. The team has been active in two stints. First being from 1954 to 1955 and then from 2010 to till date. The German team has their base in Brackley and Brixworth, United Kingdom. With 118 Race Wins in total, Mercedes has massive records under their belt. From 9 Drivers Championships picked up in 1954, 1955, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 and 7 Constructor’s Championships clinched from 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, Mercedes are no doubt placed so high up the order. Some of the famous Drivers driven for Mercedes are Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Michael Schumacher and Valtteri Bottas. Mercedes are still the favorites to win this year’s Championship alongside Red Bull with Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas in their ranks.


McLaren Formula One

At runner’s up position we have British automobile manufacturers McLaren. It is the second oldest team on F1’s history. They’ve some serious stats in for show, let’s get them. McLaren F1 team was founded by McLaren Automotive. The English team has their base in Woking, United Kingdom. The team has been active since 1966 and to this day. With 182 Race Wins in total, McLaren has the second most race wins in F1 history. The team has picked up 12 Driver’s Championships from 1974, 1976, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1998, 1999 and 2008 and 8 Constructor’s Championships clinched in 1974, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1998. Some of the famous drivers driven for McLaren were Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Mika Hakkiken, Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton. Currently McLaren operates as Midfield team, or so to say best in the Midfield behind Red Bull and Mercedes with Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo in their line up.


Formula 1 and Ferrari is somewhat synonymous. The Red F1 logo and Red Ferrari logo somewhat gives the same vibe. This Italian team is the oldest and most successful team in the history of F1. Let’s check out why they’re the best. Founded by Ferrari Automobile, this Italian giant F1 team has their base in Maranello, Italy. Regarded as the oldest F1 team, Ferrari has been active in the sport since 1950 to till date. With 238 Race Wins in total, this team is undisputed king of the game. From 15 driver’s Championships picked up in 1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1964, 1975, 1977, 1979, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2007 as well as 16 Constructor’s Championships clinched in 1961, 1964, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008, Ferrari showed why they’re the most successful team in Formula 1 till date. Some of the famous drivers to have driven for Ferrari were Michael Schumacher, Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso, Niki Lauda, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. Currently Ferrari operates with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz and mostly operate under Midfield category alongside McLaren. They’re no more the best in business, they’re just the shadows of how they were once.
