Clint Frazier Discovers Life Gets Hard when “Confidence is Stunted”

Clint Frazier

Clint Frazier is a player who has come back from many adversities to bring his career back on track. The latest being the concussion he suffered in 2018. On 24 February 2018, Clint Frazier was playing left field against the Pirates when he crashed into a chain-link fence head-on. At first glance, this collision did not seem like a big deal. However, Frazier started discovering symptoms of concussion in his daily activities shortly after.

“Anyone that has experienced post-concussive syndrome would understand — it’s a helpless feeling,” Frazier said. “To try to hit a baseball that’s being thrown by guys that are exceptional athletes and throwing as hard as they can, and then trying to track down fly balls — it’s very difficult. My everyday life was hindered.”

Clint Frazier recalls the horrifying aftermath of the collision:

Despite having these symptoms, Frazier ignored them at first and kept on playing. Over time, the issues started to get more serious as he started misplacing throws in games. On one of those occasions against the Boston Red Sox, Frazier was jeered by the angry crowd after his poor performance. Little did they know what was going on.

By 2019, the problems Frazier had were slowly starting to go away. When speaking about those times, he said, “I would say after the 2019 season, I started to experience some relief with the symptoms,” Frazier said. “I tried everything. It’s so difficult with concussions; I still get messages on social media about kids that are possibly going through it. Asking for any sort of advice because it is something that affects people so much differently. But going into the 2020 season, I started to feel like myself again.”

Frazier makes a booming comeback:

In the 2020 season, the 26-year-old finally felt that he was getting his form back. He hit .267/.394/.511 with eight homers and 26 RBIs in 39 games. Even Frazier’s teammates started to feel like he was back. “He blew us all up,” Boone said, chuckling. “I think back to the Red Sox game where he had a couple of blunders out there. His defense has always been something that’s been talked about or questioned: can he get to a certain point? We’ve seen the work over the last couple of years suggest that he could become a very good defensive outfielder. We saw that turn into results last year.”

In a chat with MLB, Frazier said that he would like to put his performances of 2019 past him. “I’m just trying to build off the foundation that I created last year; go out there and show 2019 was a fluke,”.
