Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher was hospitalized Monday in Paris for “secret treatment,” Le Parisien reported.
Schumacher became 50 on January 3 but has not been seen in public since he suffered an accident while skiing in the French Alps five years ago that left him with severe brain injuries and induced coma for several months.
Schumacher was taken Monday afternoon to the Pompidou hospital, southwest of Paris, Le Parisien said, without citing his sources.
The newspaper said the German will undergo treatment based on a stem cell transfusion by French surgeon Philippe Menasche.
A Schumacher spokesperson did not respond to a request for comments.
Schumacher remains the most successful driver in motorsport, with a record 91 F1 Grand Prix victories. The German won his first two titles with Benetton in 1994 and 1995 before achieving five consecutive Ferrari titles between 2000-2004.
In January, his family issued a statement saying Schumacher is in “the best hands”.
