Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly weighing a move for Barcelona star Lionel Messi and could make an offer next summer.
Reports by ESPN suggest that the French champions are considering the possibility of signing the Argentine and have had discussions towards that regard.
Lionel Messi sent shockwaves around the world when he stated his intention to leave Barcelona last summer after 20 years at the club, citing disappointment with the board, as well as failures on the continent as his reason.
He, however, reneged on his decision in order to avoid a protracted court battle but it is widely believed that he would leave the club next summer.
The fact that Messi’s contract expires in May 2021 means that he could depart Camp Nou for nothing and he is free to start discussing with new clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement from January.
The absence of a transfer fee significantly boosts the attractiveness of moving for the Rosario native and despite turning 34 next year, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner will undoubtedly strengthen any team he joins.
Manchester City have been named as a potential destination, following the extension of Pep Guardiola’s contract, with the two men having enjoyed a highly productive four-year spell together at Barcelona.
PSG have also been linked with Lionel Messi and these speculations were given a massive boost following Neymar’s comments after he inspired a 3-1 victory over Manchester United in the Champions League.
Speaking after the game, the Brazil international said:
”What I want most of all is to play with Messi again, to be able to enjoy him once again on the pitch,” Neymar said.
“He can play in my place, I have no problem with that! But I want to play with him next year, for sure. We have to do it next season.”
The two men spent four years together at Camp Nou and formed one of the most devastating attacking tridents in history alongside Luis Suarez.
The trio remain friends to this day and have a WhatsApp group for just the three of them, while Messi also publicly campaigned for Neymar to return to Camp Nou last year.
The report by ESPN suggests that the PSG Sporting Director Leonardo has discussed with Neymar over bringing the Argentina captain to the French capital.
However, PSG’s president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said ”I cannot talk about it at the moment” when asked about Messi’s future last Thursday.
Although Barcelona are currently in a bit of crisis, a new president is expected to be elected next month and he could ostensibly guide the club back on the right path.
It remains to be seen what impact this would have on Messi’s future but he could well remain at Camp Nou if he is guaranteed that the club is headed back in the right direction.
His close relationship with PSG stars Angel di Maria, Leandro Paredes, and Rafinha could also improve the attractiveness of going to the French capital but his huge salary could be a stumbling block.
The Ligue 1 side insist that renewing the contracts of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar remain of utmost priority and it remains to be seen whether they can afford a bid for Messi.
