Williams driver Robert Kubica during a press conference prior to the Singapore Grand Prix – September 19, 2019.
Robert Kubica will leave the Williams team at the end of this season, which will surely put an end to the driver’s extraordinary return to Formula One.
The 34-year-old Pole returned to F1 this year after suffering serious injuries in a rally race in the 2011 season.
“I’m looking for different opportunities. To evaluate other opportunities, I have made the decision that I will no longer continue with Williams after this year,” Kubica told reporters at a press conference before the Singapore Grand Prix. “I said I wanted to stay in F1 this year, but not at all costs.
“This season has been very tough from a performance point of view, but it has also been very demanding. Being back in F1 after a long time is not easy.
Williams is last in the Constructors Championship after 14 races, with an uncompetitive car and only one point scored by Kubica in Germany after the drivers in front of him were penalized. The team said it respects the Pole’s decision and will announce its line-up for 2020 in due course.
British rookie and last year’s Formula 2 champion George Russell will surely stay on the team and Canadian Nicholas Latifi is seen as Kubica’s likely replacement.
