As the global pandemic has struck every sector of the world, the fight game also bore a loss. The Russian-born Swedish professional mixed martial artist, Khamzat Chimaev who competed in the welterweight and middleweight divisions of UFC might retire soon. The 26-year-old young fighting future is uncertain.
This concerned Dana White and in an interview, White expressed his views. A few months back, Khamzat Chimaev tested positive for Coronavirus, which affected Chimaev’s health severely. Also, as a result, Chimaev’s career got forestalled by COVID before it could truly pick up steam.
Khamzat Chimaev is an absolute savage claimed Dana White
In a conversation with BT Sport, the promoter said, “The problem is, the reason that everybody loves him is because the guy is an absolute savage. He wants to fight every weekend, believes he’ll win the world title right now.
But the problem with a guy like that is you can’t calm him down. He should be resting right now, shouldn’t be training at all. He should be resting and recovering, but he won’t do it.
“At the end of the day, he’s a grown man, and we can’t control what he does on a daily basis. I don’t know how this is going to play out. We’ll see.”
The fighter tested positive for Covid-19 last December. Since then, the fighter was forced twice to withdraw from headlining fights against top welterweight contender Leon Edwards. Also, Three months since tested positive, Chimaev fits the bill as a long hauler.
Khamzat needs rest says, White
On being asked if the fighter would still retire, Dana replied,
“If that’s what the guy wants to do, that’s up to him. But what he really needs to do is go home, watch a movie, take a nap, relax, and recover. (But) it’s not the killer mentality. He’s a killer. It’s hard to control a guy like that.”
“This guy’s a physical specimen. This guy is unbelievable. He’s probably never been sick like this before. The difference between him and all the other fighters (who’ve had COVID-19) is the other fighters did what they were supposed to do. They weren’t running full speed on the treadmill and taking grappling classes with guys who were healthy. You can’t do that.
The president added, Dana showed what the fighter needs to do to recover fast. Moreover, if the fighter wants to retire, Dana will not stop him and will let him make the big decision.
