Coach Johnathon Banks was unhappy with Gennadiy Golovkin’s performance when he defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko at Madison Square Garden, New York, Saturday (5/10/2019) evening local time.

Golovkin won with a unanimous decision in a 12-round IBF middle-class belt duel. Banks said that Golovkin had to break or change his fighting style to improve performance.

GGG-nickname Golovkin- appeared beyond expectations, and won with a score of 114-113, 115-112, and 115-112. However, he was injured by Derevyanchenko (13-2, 10 KOs) in the fifth round, and often retreated when attacked.

No wonder fans cheered on him. The loud taunts received by Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KOs) after the fight, and it clearly shows that they saw him as a loser in the fight.

Although Golovkin won the fight, Banks was not happy. He is responsible for GGG’s performance and wants to change his style. Banks does not want the Kazakhstan boxer to continue to receive the punishment as it is now, because he is an older boxer facing a younger fight.

Banks said the GGG failed to do the things they had done during the training camp, such as moving their heads to avoid the fist and increasing the results of their beatings. Golovkin often withdrew, and let Derevyanchenko come forward to attack him.

Banks said he told GGG during the fight that he did not want GGG to do such a thing, but Golovkin failed to follow what he was instructing.

“This is my mistake,” Banks said. “Either he needs to see or change his style. I hate seeing my boxer take all the hits, even though I know better than what I see. I am responsible for that. ”

“When we started the fight, I tried to get GGG to start the fight quickly because he fought younger boxers. I tried to make it start faster, “Banks said.

What Banks didn’t say might be too late to change GGG’s fighting style. He is 37 years old and has fought in the same style since his amateur days. In seeing Golovkin’s defeat in the 2004 Olympics final, he was beaten by Russian boxers.

Golovkin does not have the stamina to fight in the style of fast speed that Banks wants, and he does not look comfortable when fighting fast, which he needs to defeat the young fighter.

Golovkin is also likely not to retire before completing his 6 fight contract. This is the third battle of GGG from the contract. What he wants is a trilogy match against Saul Canelo Alvarez, next May. That will be a big day for Golovkin and Canelo.
