“I didn’t expect that I was going to start this game,” Luka Doncic thought he wouldn’t make it to the All-Star starting five.

The All-Star game is scheduled to be held on 7th March in Atlanta. It will feature some of the biggest stars in the whole league such as Stephen Curry and LeBron James. On Tuesday, the NBA revealed the starting five from both teams. The teams were decided by fan votes, media inputs, and player opinions. Luka Doncic and Steph Curry were selected as the two-point guards.

Another point guard who was in the running for the starting line-up was Damian Lillard. The race was so close between Doncic and Lillard that the votes were tied at the end of the voting process. However, Doncic reigned supreme after the tie-breaking votes, which were based on the fan votes.

Luka Doncic believes Lillard was more deserving of the spot:

After the names were revealed to the general public, Luka Doncic acknowledged that he did not think he’d be in the starting line-up. According to CBS Sports, he said, “I didn’t expect that I was going to start this game. I know that maybe Lillard deserved it more than me.”

Luka Doncic and Damian Lillard were both in consideration of the All-Star starting line-up

It was just a situation where there were more quality players than there were positions. That is why one had to give way to the other. Although, Damian Lillard will be present in the All-Star game and will certainly come off the bench.

Individual performances of Lillard and Doncic:

Doncic has been phenomenal throughout this season, scoring at the rate of 29.1 points per game. He also averages 9.4 assists in every game, which is the third-highest in the entire league. His stats speak volumes about him being an All-Star candidate.

Damian Lillard on the other hand is taking the league by storm this season. Averaging 29.8 points and 7.7 assists per game, he has carried the Portland Trail Blazers to the fourth spot in the Western Conference standings. “Dame time” has been constantly on show in every game where the Blazers have found themselves in a spot of bother.

In the All-Star games, the MVP is picked by judging the performance of players. This means that starting a game does not have any effect on the judgment. Both Luka Doncic and Damian Lillard will have ample time to showcase their skills in the game. It will be a treat for spectators’ eyes seeing all the big names taking to the court and battle it out against each other.
