“How the hell do you not hire David Vanterpool”: Blazers’ Damian Lillard Furious With Timberwolves’ Decision to Ignore Vanterpool for the Head Coach Position

Damian Lillard has spent almost a decade with the Portland Trail Blazers and has achieved the superstar status in the league. However, he might not have grown that much if it weren’t for one person. The former Blazers’ assistant coach David Vanterpool.

Vanterpool was with the organization for seven seasons from 2012 to 2019. During this time span, Vanterpool played a huge role in the development of Lillard and CJ McCollum. However, in 2019, Vanterpool decided to join the Timberwolves.

Many believed that he would get his much-deserved opportunity to be a head coach with the Wolves.  In fact, due to their poor start to the season, the Wolves fired their current coach Ryan Sanders. This was the perfect opportunity to promote Vanterpool to the head coaching position.

But the Wolves shocked everyone with their decision to go with the Raptors’ assistant coach Chris Finch as their new head coach.

When the Wolves announced their decision, Lillard was among the people who raised are completely shocked by this decision. The Blazers’ star tweeted:

How the hell do you not hire David Vanterpool and he’s right there on the bench… and has been in front office SUCCESSFULLY and on the front of a bench of a winning team SUCCESSFULLY (7 years) … and also has played a major role in the development of a dominant backcourt smdh!”

Like Lillard pointed out, this might be a huge blunder on the Wolves’ side. They are already at the bottom of the barrel in the league with just seven wins this season! The organization has been struggling to find its form for the past couple of seasons.
