Funk master Sterling: “I’m a dangerous man on getting anybody down”

Aljamain Sterling presents his views on his fight on UFC 259 against Petr Yan

UFC 259 will undoubtedly be a big roller coaster. The event will take place this Saturday, March 6, at the Apex in Las Vegas. The pay-per-view will feature three title fights at the top of the card. The first fight will be a battle between 135-pound champion Petr Yan and the No. 1 contender for Yan’s title, ‘Funk Master’. The fight between Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling might be the most tightly contested of all three championship matches.

Also, recently Aljamain Sterling joined SportsCenter to preview his bantamweight title fight against Petr Yan at UFC 259. The Funk Master talked about his approach to the bout, being frustrated at Yan fighting Jose Aldo at UFC 251. Furthermore, what he has learned from golf and chess and how he puts it in the fight game.

Heat for the Bantamweight title

‘No mercy’ held the bantamweight title in July with a dominant performance against Jose Aldo, scoring a fifth-round TKO win in that contest. Yan joined the UFC in 2018, holds a record of 15-1, and continues to be unbeaten in the UFC.

The number one contender for the Bantamweight title earned his shot post the Five-match win streak. In his recent fight against Cory Sandhagen, the funk master locked up ‘the Sandman’ for submission. The first attempt being unsuccessful, then got arms underneath Sandhagen’s chin., forcing him to tap out. Sterling holds a record of 19-3 overall. The American’s most recent loss was a knockout defeat at the hands of Marlon Moraes. Before that, his other losses were split-decision.

Aljamain Sterling’s approach for the Fight

The fighter on being asked about the frustration he went through explained how he seasoned it. The fighter exclaimed, being frustrated due to not knowing what was happening, how the cards would end up playing out. However, the fighter knew what needs to be done. Staying motivated, Sterling knew he had to beat Cory Sandhagen.

On finally getting the shot for the title, Funk Master looked more motivated. Yet, one thing that frustrated him more was his weight going down, the fear of not losing the gains. To make sure the fighter did not do too much at the training camps, he drank outside the training camp, which made him comfortable releasing stress.

Coming to the approach for the battle, ‘I am a dangerous man when I get anybody down.’- says Sterling.

Sterling also said that “I’m just gonna go out there and just bum rush them and see what happens and drag them down to the ground and I think if I can get my hands locked, I can have good success.”

Sterling is not afraid of Petr Yan, he does not care what his approach is going to be, be it the pull-out style, or try to time something, he believes the odds are in his favor.

On being asked about his post on Instagram where the fighter had an ice-cream, Sterling smiled with a reply that to do something, one needs to have a love and balance between things. The 31-year-old fighter knows the discipline and is on the course to achieve the accolades.

Comparing golf to the fight game, golf is about patience. Further, Sterling found it frustrating. Chess is a game where you plan your moves and pick the spots, to connect it with the fight game, Sterling’s style is defensive and is going to be offensive.

Furthermore, the Number one contender hopes to take down Petr Yan to claim the title. The wait is almost over for the battle. The UFC 259 will take place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
