No doubt Barcelona star Lionel Messi and the mainstay of Juventus Cristiano Ronaldo are two geniuses of modern football today. They have been a source of debate over the past 15 years about who is the best of the two? However, scientific facts will give a little picture of who is better.

Messi and Ronaldo are the best duos ever and they not only play the game at the same time, have also competed in the league, the Spanish league, the same when Ronaldo carried the Real Madrid flag.

Among them, they have won 11 Ballon d’Or, with Messi six trophies, and Ronaldo five. They also collected 10 Golden Shoes (Messi six, Ronaldo four).

The debate has been going on for more than a decade but now, thanks to science and technology, a comparison of the two can be seen, that Messi is better than Ronaldo.

Professor Jesse Davis from Universidad Catolica Leuven University in Leuven, Belgium, and data experts at SciSports are trying to determine who is really the best of the two, using supercomputers.

Tech scholars try to find out who really deserves the GOAT (greatest of all time) title based on 1,600 different actions that occur during the game.

Explaining the scoring system, Davis explained: “A player’s value is often determined by goals and assists,” he said as reported by The Sun. ‘However, goals are a rare event, and an average of 1,600 actions are expected in matches.’

‘Our model looks at every action, in the form of shots, passes, dribbles, tackles, and we calculate the value.’

The result? Messi is twice as good. Even Messi is a big winner. Messi won a total score of Valuing Actions by Estimating Probabilities (VAEP) 1.21. While Ronaldo’s VAEP score, almost half of what Messi got, which is 0.61.

One of the scientists who analyzed the data, Tom Decroos, a Ph.D. student, revealed why Messi won with a far different score. ‘In the first season, Messi and Ronaldo’s score were very close to each other. From the 2015/2016 season, Messi moved away from his eternal rival.’

‘We also see comparisons with most soccer players. Like those who do a lot of action, but with less high scores, that’s what happened with Paul Pogba, for example.’

‘Or you see players who tend to kick the ball a little, but have a big impact, that’s typical of strikers like Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah and Ronaldo.’

‘Messi is exceptional in this field. He has a very high number of actions, but that action also has a high value.’
