Every year we look forward to PSG finally ending its losing streak in Europe. While they continue to invest and build towards European dominance, they underperform each year. While this year might be no different, the French giants are the favorites to bid farewell to Dortmund on Wednesday night.
Dortmund won 2-1 at home when the pair met in the first leg. However, that’s a slim lead for a team with a poor European road record and problems at the back. We can see the visitors exploited defensively, especially given the talent that PSG has amassed in advance.
PSG’s win percentage in the Champions League knockout stages is 29% (two wins in seven), compared to 67% in the group stages (12 wins in 18). Five of Tuchel’s six defeats in the Champions League have been in the knockout stage (83%). However, most of that record came as manager of Dortmund, which further speaks to his poor record in this competition.
Borussia Dortmund has lost each of their last five knockout matches outside of the Champions League, the last tasting victory in February 2014 in a 4-2 victory against Zenit under Jürgen Klopp. After defeats at Inter and Barça in the group stage, the German team has now lost four of its last six road trips in the Champions League.
