Former F1 Champion Nelson Piquet feels Max Verstappen is better than Hamilton given they drive the same car under same team. The Brazilian believes Mercedes are still better than Red Bull in terms of technology and engineering of their car.
In the recently concluded Bahrain Grand Prix, Lewis edged past Red Bull’s Max to the Sakhir Championship. The difference between them was just seven-tenth of a second.
Piquet is of the opinion, if Verstappen would have been driving a Silver Arrows car, the Dutchman would have taken the Championship home. As a matter of fact, Max Verstappen is also the title favourite this year alongside Lewis.
Talking about the Dutch Red Bull prodigy, Nelson conveyed in an interview with Autosport, “Max is more aggressive. He may make mistakes more frequently due to this aggressiveness, but in my opinion he’s better than Hamilton. Things are too easy for Hamilton to win it all with Bottas by his side as a second driver.”
Hamilton. Verstappen. Bahrain. 2021.

Nelson, further asserted, “First of all, we have to consider that F1 is a category with different cars, so it’s very difficult to make a direct comparison between two drivers if they are not on the same team. But if Max were driving for Mercedes, I’m sure that he would smash Hamilton.”
Max Verstappen to fare better than Hamilton at Silver Arrows?
While in his interview, 68-year-old former Lotus driver also talked about how Bottas, Lewis’s teammate at the Silverstone based team fails to justify his place. Even his old teammate Nico wasn’t as good as the seven times world champion. This, however gives the Briton an upper hand in every race.
Max was the hot favourite to win the Bahrain Grand Prix, but his narrow loss to Hamilton showed W12 is still as advanced as Red Bull’s much improved RB16B, if not less.
The Brazilian veteran in fact is of the opinion if Verstappen and Hamilton both drive the same car, Verstappen will have upper hand any day. It will be interesting to see if they end up in the same team some day in near future and have one of the greatest dual in the sport’s history, the fans are hopeful.
