George Russell is quite unsure whether Mercedes will be calling him again in 2021 as a potential replacement for their regular drivers.
The Williams driver got his first opportunity to drive for Mercedes while replacing Lewis Hamilton for the Sakhir Grand Prix last year. This came as a result of Hamilton testing positive for COVID-19.
The decision further came as a ‘big surprise ‘ to many as Mercedes’s official reserve driver, Stoffel Vandoorne was available to take Hamilton’s place.
“I mean, nothing official has been decided. Obviously, that was all arranged very last minute for us last year,” Russell said during an interview with a leading sport daily.
“They need to be prepared because these things can happen on a Friday night, for another driver to be able to do the race, but I think we’ll just cross that bridge when we get there.”, he further added.
As far as the 2021 season is concerned, Vandoorne is expected to remain in the role alongside Nyck de Vries. Besides, the Racing point driver while Nico Hulkenberg is also in contention for the same spot.
George Russell has been highly impressive during the pre-season
The competition is getting intense for the spot and every driver is putting their best to prove their contention. Still, as indicated by Russell, this is something that cannot be decided in advance.
Despite all the uncertainty, George has delivered well during the race weekend in a Mercedes. He nearly grabbed the pole position from Valtteri Bottas in the qualifying session. Besides, the Williams man went past Finn until a puncture put an end to all his hopes of claiming the top spot.
Russell still believes that his performance has given him the required confidence boost ahead of the 2021 F1 season.
“What was very interesting for me was I qualified second, which my best was qualifying ever. I think previously it was 12th – and I was disappointed not to be on pole. Just because you’re suddenly at the front of a grid, it doesn’t change that goal. And that satisfaction you get by getting the absolute most out of your equipment.”, He said.
The Williams man is all praises for his team for providing him with this opportunity. He still believes that getting a chance to drive for Mercedes is right on par with that glorious feeling of victory.
“Equally, coming away from that event, I had a few tough days. But equally, I put it behind me, I learned from it. I was very grateful to Mercedes and Williams for giving me the chance. And ultimately, I had to see that race as a victory in itself, even if I didn’t get the trophy at the end of the day.”, Russell further added
With Team Mercedes ready to defend their F1 title in 2021, all eyes will be on their talisman driver Lewis Hamilton. Hence, the fans have to wait and watch about how things unfold for George Russell and his aspirations with the German team.
