Andrew Shovlin, the Mercedes trackside engineering director has talked about the uncertainty of this year’s pole position in Formula One. 2021 is such a season where it’s difficult to predict a winner and hold someone favourite over others.
The 2021 season has been more like a Mercedes vs Red Bull match up at the top while it was McLaren vs Ferrari for the third place. The drivers are so evenly matched, it gets difficult to hold someone potential winner at the end of the season.

Shovlin, talking about this, conveyed in an interview, “Red Bull are actually never that different to us. That’s one of the key things this year is that in qualifying it has been anyone’s pole every race so far, apart from Bahrain where we weren’t competitive. Whereas in previous years you could say ‘we’ll be quick at these tracks, they’ll be quicker at the others, we’re just not seeing that”

The next race in Formula One calendar will be the Monaco Grand Prix. Shovlin’s Mercedes will go there as the Constructor Championship leaders while their driver is also ahead in the driver’s Championship. However, Andrew things the season is still not over and Red Bull can come up strongly in the races to follow.
The 47-year-old Engineer further asserted on this, “I don’t know that this is a sign of things to come because you look at what we’ve got in the next few races with Monaco, [and] will certainly be in Baku, they’re all really, really different tracks that throw up very peculiar challenge”

Mercedes managed to win three out of four races this season while Red Bull winning only one. It’ll be interesting to see if Mercedes can continue their domination in the sport or their title rival this year Red Bull will dethrone them to claim their Championship.
