Dustin Poirier insists on facing Conor McGregor: "I should face someone from the top"

The former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier, does not give up trying to make a fight with Conor McGregor, who is negotiating to face Donald Cerrone in January.

The American said that the Irish must face someone from the top, not looking for an easy return in the sport. In an interview with MMA Fighting, the American showed respect for Cerrone, but said that Conor was wrong to try to return to the “Cowboy.”

“I think it would make more sense if he wanted to face someone top. I am a former interim champion and he was a linear champion. We faced each other years ago and took different paths. We conquer great facts. I think it would make a lot of sense. Number two versus number three in the ranking.” said Poirier.

Both have an ancient history in the UFC. They faced each other in 2014 when neither of them had the reputation they have today. On that occasion, the Irish had no problems and defeated the American by unanimous decision at UFC 178.

“I respect Cerrone and everything he did, but I think he is reaching the end of his career. “Cowboy” can go there and knock Conor out. I’m not saying it’s over, but I think it’s a favorable fight for McGregor’s return.” Dustin said.

“When they offer me a name that encourages me, they will be the right person. Conor, Nate Diaz, a Khabib,Tony. They are the names that motivate,” concluded Poirier.
