Dillian Whyte chose duel vs. Alexander Povetkin in April instead of waiting for 800 days against WBC heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder. The Heavyweight boxer is ready to destroy Povetkin while waiting for the chance to fight for the WBC title.
Whyte was frustrated in chasing after Wilder, whom he labeled a cowardly boxer for always avoiding him fighting. Wilder instead chose to maintain the WBC belt in a rematch with Tyson Fury on February 22. “I won’t wait another 800 days (for Wilder). For what?” Whyte said.
Whyte will hold talks with promoter Eddie Hearn next week to discuss plans to fight for the WBC title race after the victory over Mariusz Wach at the end of 2019 in Saudi Arabia. ‘He (Hearn) mentioned April 18 in an interview, so I think that’s the date,’ Whyte told Sky Sports.
‘I have a meeting with Eddie on Tuesday, so we will see because there are a lot of battles going on and lots of things,’ said Whyte, who will welcome a maximum of three fights in 2020.
‘We must pay attention to the date, time, etc. so I need to talk to him to get a complete picture of his plans. We will meet and see what his plans are and then we will make a decision,’ he continued.
Regarding the venue of the battle, Wilder hopes to be held in England with some appropriate venue options. He said: Maybe in London or Manchester, something like that. O2 is widely ordered, so London or Manchester. Two good places and it would be good to move to another part of the country one day too. Manchester Arena is also good.
Whyte considered Povetkin the ideal opponent for him. He only lost against Wladimir Klitschko and Joshua and drew with Michael Hunter in December. Whyte will enjoy a brutal fight with the former WBA champion.
‘If he wants it, he can get it,’ Whyte said. ‘This will be a cry because he is not a mover and I am not a mover, so he is an advanced boxer and I am advanced,’ he continued.
‘Povetkin came to fight, is not. He did not come to screw up. I’m the same, so let’s make it happen. Let’s see who has the best hook left.’
