Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has signed a new contract that will keep him in Old Trafford until at least June 2023, the Premier League club said Monday.
United said in a statement that the English club had the option to extend the agreement for another year.
De Gea, 28, was already in the last year of his contract and could have started talks with clubs outside England in the face of a possible signing in January.
The Spanish international has played 367 games for United since joining the club in 2011.
“It’s been a privilege to spend eight years at this great club and it’s a real honor to have the opportunity to continue my career at Manchester United,” De Gea told United’s Web site.
“Since I came here, I never imagined I’d play more than 350 games for this club. Now my future is assured, all I want is to help the team achieve what I think they are capable of and win trophies again, all together”.
“As one of the veterans of the team, I want to offer my support and leadership to the young players so that they understand what it means to play here”.
Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said De Gea was a vital part of his plans to take United back to the top of English football.
United are fourth in the English league after five games, with two wins, two draws and one defeat. They host Astana in the Europa League group stage on Thursday and West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday.
