Daniil Medvedev Is the First to Be Ranked No.2 Out of “Big 4” Since 2005

Daniil Medvedev during ATP Cup

The ATP Tour star Daniil Medvedev has created history to become the first man from outside of the ‘Big Four’ to be ranked Top 2 since 2005. He established a record by holding the top ranking and emerged as a new name in the sport. Over 15 years, there was no one to break into the top ranking apart from Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray. No outsider could make it to the apex till now.

The ATP had confirmed on Saturday about Medvedev’s ranking of no. 2, which was disclosed on 15th March.

Medvedev achieved the mark despite his failure against Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic in the first round of the Rotterdam Open. The Russian had the chance to overtake Nadal as number two, behind Djokovic, if he would have reached the final of Rotterdam Open.

The last time the combination of the ‘Best Four’ was missing in the rankings was when Lleyton Hewitt was ranked at No. 2. ATP Rankings of July 18, 2005.

Medvedev’s significant loss in 2021

The 25-year-old has also seen a significant loss in 2021 which includes his 20-match winning streak to come to an end. In the Australian Open final, the hands of Novak Djokovic defeated Medvedev. Djokovic swept Daniil to have two Grand Slam singles titles of the male record shared by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
I don’t like to lose matches. [It] doesn’t matter if it’s a first round or a final of a Grand Slam… I feel like it’s the kind of match I won throughout this tournament, [but] he won today,” said Medvedev.

Daniil Medvedev admires the ‘Big Three’

The Russian has always praised the ‘Big Three’ and believes that they are “just better than other tennis players”.
As I’ve always said about the Big Three, they are unbelievable. The records they have set [are] probably not going to be beaten maybe in 100 years,” Medvedev said.
According to the 2019 US Open champion, he has looked up to the legends in his professional career. The milestones that they have set are dream targets for other players to achieve. It seems unattainable to knock their set up records.
