A very entertaining incident took place in the Australian Open 2021. Conversely, the world’s no. 4 Daniil Medvedev got furious at his coach. This made quite a headline after the match. However, he has been on news in past for his outrageous ethics on the court. The 25-year-old has won nine ATP Tour Singles titles.
What happened in the match?
Medvedev took down Filip Krajinovic in the third round of the Australian Open. This match took place in Rod Laver Arena on 13 February 2021.
The Russian had quite a hard match against world no. 33. Subsequently, this match dragged on to the fifth set with 6-3, 6-3, 4-6. 3-6 and 6-0.
Medvedev’s coach Gilles Cervara was guiding him from the empty stands. But the Russian got really anxious during the match. Therefore, he outrageously screamed at his coach and asked him to leave the venue. As a result, Cervara packed his bags and left Melbourne Park.
Medvedev said, “Will you let me play? Let me play!”
In this match, Krajinovic got a warning from the coach because he did not put on the mask while going to the toilet.
What happened after the match?
The match ended in the favor of Daniil Medvedev. Therefore, now he has a winning streak of 17 matches. Next, he will face Mackenzie McDonald in the fourth round of the Australian Open on 15 February 2021.
However, in the after-match press conference, he explained his furious behavior with his coach. He said that he was actually frustrated with himself during the match. But to calm himself down, he unleashed his outrage and frustration over coach Cervara.
He also said that he will talk with his coach about this issue. He seems quite calm about it as he said this was not his first outburst. Therefore, he mentioned his coach knows well about his ethics and they will continue to work together. He acknowledged his coach leaving the court was a wise decision because then he would not get too distracted and stay focused on the match.
Medvedev said, “To be honest, for sure first of all it’s me being angry at myself,
“When you’re on the tennis court in the heat of the moment, you’re always trying to find somebody that makes mistakes for you, so you never blame yourself.
“That’s tennis players, but I think he did a good job because I was losing it a little bit. I’ve been working on being calm for a long time, and I think I’ve made a lot of progress.
“He left so I could not have this distraction, because I would have nobody to argue with, even if my wife stayed!
“For sure we are going to discuss it, what I feel, what he feels, and what should have been done better. I’m sure we’ll continue working in a good way being good friends outside the court.”
What can we expect from Daniil Medvedev?
Medvedev is showing a really outstanding performance in the tournament. He really proved why he is in the top 5. This was not his first outrage, and we might see more of his outrages on the Melbourne Court in the tournament. There are chances that Russia might take the Australian Open title this year. There are four Russians in the last 16 of the tournament.
