Canelo Alvarez Admits He Lacked “Maturity” To Face Floyd Mayweather in The Last Fight

Canelo Alvarez

Canelo Alvarez, one of boxing’s biggest stars is set to take on WBO titleholder Billy Joe Saunders in a megafight. With a phenomenal 55-1-2 record, the 30-year-old is the pound-for-pound king of the current scene.

Alvarez’s only loss came against Floyd Mayweather, the man regarded as the best boxer of all time. But rather than being upset, Canelo says the fight gave him an important life lesson.

In Mike Tyson’s podcast, Alvarez talked about the bout held in Vegas.

He said, “I’ve grown so much. I always thought I need to fight first with Cotto, Lara, and all of those guys, and then Floyd. But that’s what it is, you know? That’s what it is. I’m OK. I needed more experience and maturity [before facing Floyd], I don’t think of that fight as a loss. I think of that fight as I learn from that fight.”

Canelo Alvarez was just 23 when fought against Mayweather and believes his inexperience was the reason he lost. Now as a more mature fighter he is ready to take on anyone.

Canelo Alvarez VS Billy Joe Saunders

The week-long countdown for the Cinco de Mayo super-middleweight fight has begun. With Alvarez being the fan favorite, it’s highly likely he will have an overwhelming victory. However, there is no denying that Saunders is a tough opponent.

Ever since his bout with middleweight Gennadiy ‘Triple G’ Golovkin, Billy has improved a lot. Every now and then, Alvarez faces someone who can mix up their approach and counter-punch from numerous situations.

The unbeaten record of Billy, combined with his technical style, means Alvarez will likely need to be patient. Canelo needs to overcome his feelings of frustration before he receives that first real opportunity to take over in the contest.
