“A bad day in London is still better than a good day anywhere else”.
The phrase does not fit the bill if you follow the champions league being a fan of the major EPL clubs in London- Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur.
London holds the record for securing at least one Champion’s League qualification spot every year for the last 22 years.
The same streak currently stands endangered. None of the London clubs are looking promising enough to claim a top 4 spot in the EPL table this year.
Can Chelsea repeat their Champions League heroics?
Frank Lampard took the blues to a top-four finish in his first season as coach last year. That was the time when he got quoted as a ‘Future Sir Alex Ferguson’ at the Stamford bridge. Regardless of players, management or fans, he became a favorite for everyone within his maiden coaching stint.
Things don’t look that promising this year. Frank Lampard is sacked, and he is replaced by former PSG coach Thomas Tuchel. Chelsea is currently reeling at the 7th spot with 9 wins and 33 points out of 21 games.
So, all is not right for the club and fans right now. Also, the fight for the top 4 has gone intense, with two teams from Manchester sitting on top of the table. With a new coach and bigger challenges, blues have to face an uphill task in their next few matches.
Arsenal and their quest for a Champions League spot
If there’s one team that has proved to be the biggest disappointment this season, it has to be Arsenal. Who would have thought that a team with such a legacy would struggle to make it to the top 10 clubs in the points table?
The club is sitting at the 10th spot with 31 points, and 9 wins out of 21 matches played. Mikel Arteta’s team really has to buckle up and bring upon a miracle in the upcoming matches to secure a champion’s league spot.
Arsenal also needs to find consistency in their gameplay, and Arteta and co. really need to put their heads in the right direction.
Spurs trying hard to turn the tables in their favor
Given their defeat against Brighton on Sunday, the chances of making it into the top 4 this time look slim for Tottenham hotspurs. Nevertheless, they seem like the second-best team in London to put up some serious challenge to the current top six.
Even after making a thunderous start to their EPL campaign this year, Jose Mourinho’s men have lost their way in the following matches. Currently, they sit at the 6th spot in the EPL points table and must stay ready for some serious challenges from the likes of Chelsea and Everton in the coming times.
West ham united- London’s biggest hope for a Champions League spot this season
West ham united has been one team that has impressed everyone from the Football pundits to the club fans. Even after being handed a 1-3 defeat against the mighty Liverpool on January 31, 2021, the team is not ready to give up anytime soon.
They currently sit comfortably at the 5th spot with 10 wins and 35 points out of 21 matches. There are expectations from them to give some stern competition to other top 5 teams in the coming times.
Tottenham Hotspur and west ham united seems like the only hope for a UCL spot for London this year. Still, given their records, we cannot yet write off teams like Arsenal and Chelsea for a probable comeback.
